👨‍👩‍👧 Travelling with Children

Child seat laws, family-friendly experiences, safety, and planning advice for travelling New Zealand with children.

New Zealand is exceptionally family-friendly

New Zealand is one of the world's best destinations for family travel. The country is safe, clean, English-speaking, and filled with natural wonder that genuinely captivates children of all ages. Kiwi Grand Tours designs many private family programmes across both islands -- from Hobbiton for LOTR-loving families to whale watching in Kaikoura, penguin encounters in Oamaru, and glacier walks on the West Coast.

Child seat laws -- this is mandatory

New Zealand law requires all children to be restrained in an approved child safety restraint appropriate for their age, height, and weight. This is strictly enforced and non-negotiable.

Child age/sizeRequired restraint
0-6 monthsRear-facing approved infant restraint (capsule or convertible seat)
6 months to 4 yearsRear-facing or forward-facing approved child restraint
4 years to 7 yearsForward-facing child restraint or booster seat with harness
7 years to approximately 148cm tallBooster seat with adult seatbelt
Over 148cmStandard adult seatbelt (no booster required)
Important: Child seat requirements apply regardless of how short your journey is. Police can and do stop vehicles to check. Fines apply for non-compliance. When booking a KGT private programme with children, always provide children's ages and approximate weights so we can arrange the correct restraints in advance.

Arranging child seats for your KGT programme

Kiwi Grand Tours arranges child seats for all private vehicles when children are included in the group. Please provide the following when booking:

We confirm the correct restraint is installed before any programme begins. If hiring a car independently (without a KGT driver), child seats can be hired from most car rental companies -- request at the time of booking, not on collection day.

Family-friendly experiences in New Zealand

Experiences that captivate children

  • Hobbiton Movie Set (Matamata): Magical for any child who has watched The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit -- and engaging for all ages even without prior knowledge
  • Rotorua geothermal: Boiling mud, erupting geysers, and brightly coloured thermal pools at Te Puia are endlessly fascinating for children
  • Whale watching (Kaikoura): Sperm whales sighted year-round -- one of the world's best accessible whale watching experiences
  • Penguin encounters (Oamaru): Little blue penguins returning to their colony at dusk -- a magical evening experience
  • Glacier walks (Franz Josef): Guided walks on the glacier face -- accessible for children over approximately 8 years old
  • Interislander ferry (Wellington-Picton): The 3-hour Cook Strait crossing through the Marlborough Sounds is a genuine adventure for children
  • Gondola and luge (Queenstown): The Skyline Gondola and luge ride is universally loved by children and adults alike
  • Kiwi encounters (multiple locations): Seeing a live kiwi at one of NZ's nocturnal kiwi houses is a genuine highlight for most children

Health considerations for children in NZ

Accommodation with children

Dining with children

New Zealand restaurants are generally relaxed and welcoming of children. Most cafes and mid-range restaurants have high chairs and children's menus available. Fine dining restaurants are typically adult-oriented in the evenings but will accommodate older children. For younger children, a 6pm reservation is usually more comfortable than a late booking.

Flying domestically with children

New Zealand's domestic airlines (Air New Zealand and Jetstar) both allow children's car seats on board if purchased as a separate seat. Infants under 2 can travel on a parent's lap on domestic flights. Air New Zealand is generally better equipped for families. For private programmes including domestic flights, advise us of children's ages so we can ensure the correct booking class and seating arrangements.

Our advice: New Zealand genuinely rewards multi-generational family travel. The combination of safe infrastructure, extraordinary natural environments, and Maori cultural experiences creates memories that children carry for life. We design many family programmes and know which experiences truly land with different age groups -- tell us your children's ages and interests and we'll build an itinerary around them.
