Which visa do most travellers need?
Entry requirements for New Zealand depend on your passport nationality. Most international visitors will need one of the following:
| Visa Type | Who it's for | How to apply |
| NZeTA (Electronic Travel Authority) | Visa-waiver countries including UK, USA, Canada, EU, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and others | Online via the Immigration NZ app or website before travel -- typically $17-$30 NZD |
| Visitor Visa | All other nationalities including India, China, South Africa, and most of Asia and the Middle East | Online via Immigration NZ -- requires full application and supporting documents |
| Australian Permanent Residents | Holders of an Australian permanent visa may have different entry arrangements | Check immigration.govt.nz for current conditions |
NZeTA -- the quick option for eligible travellers
The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a pre-travel permission for citizens of visa-waiver countries. It is not a visa -- it simply links electronically to your passport. Key facts:
- Apply via the official Immigration NZ website or mobile app before travel (not at the border)
- Typically approved within 72 hours, sometimes within minutes
- Allows stays of up to 90 days per visit
- An International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD $35 is charged alongside the NZeTA fee
- Must be applied for on the official Immigration NZ platform -- avoid third-party sites charging a mark-up
Visitor Visa -- for Indian and other passport holders
Indian passport holders and nationals of most Asian, African, and Middle Eastern countries require a full Visitor Visa. This is applied for online through the Immigration New Zealand portal (myvisainformation.immigration.govt.nz).
| Detail | Overview |
| Where to apply | Online via Immigration NZ -- no in-person interview required for most applicants |
| Typical validity | Single or multiple entry, up to 9 months -- decided by the visa officer |
| Processing time | Typically 20-30 working days -- apply at least 6-8 weeks before travel |
| Work rights | None -- visitor visa prohibits any paid work |
| Visa format | Electronic, linked to your passport -- a visa label may or may not be issued |
| Extension | Can be extended from within NZ in some cases -- must apply before current visa expires |
Document checklist
Requirements vary by individual circumstances, but most Visitor Visa applications include:
Required documents (standard application)
- Valid passport -- with at least 3 months' validity beyond your planned departure from New Zealand (6 months recommended)
- Recent passport-style photograph -- meeting Immigration NZ photo requirements
- Proof of funds -- recent bank statements (typically 3-6 months), showing a stable balance consistent with your trip length. Immigration NZ suggests approximately NZD $1,000 per month of stay as a guide
- Proof of employment or income -- employer letter, business registration, income tax returns, or leave approval showing you have a reason to return home
- Confirmed return or onward travel -- flight bookings showing you intend to leave New Zealand before your visa expires
- Travel itinerary -- an outline of where you plan to stay and what you plan to do (we can provide this as part of your KGT booking)
- Accommodation bookings -- hotel confirmations for at least the first few nights
- Evidence of ties to your home country -- property, family, ongoing employment or study -- supporting your intention to return
- Travel insurance -- not mandatory for the visa itself, but strongly recommended
- Sponsor/invitation letter (if visiting family or friends) -- from your host, plus evidence of their NZ status
The most important factor: genuine intent
The core test for every visitor visa application is whether the visa officer believes you genuinely intend to visit temporarily and return home. Strong, well-documented ties to your home country matter more than any single document. Inconsistencies between your application, bank statements, and stated travel plans are the most common cause of delays or refusals.
Applying: step by step
- Create an account at myvisainformation.immigration.govt.nz -- use the official NZ Immigration portal, not third-party sites
- Select Visitor Visa and complete the application form, ensuring every detail matches your passport exactly
- Gather your documents -- clear digital scans (PDF or JPEG). Documents in languages other than English need certified translations
- Pay the visa application fee -- confirm the current fee before paying, as it is reviewed periodically and is non-refundable
- Track your application using your client number in the Immigration NZ portal
- Respond promptly to any request for additional information -- delays here are the most common cause of processing delays
Our advice: Apply at least 6-8 weeks before travel, longer during peak season (December-February and school holidays). Kiwi Grand Tours can provide supporting documents for your visa application -- confirmed itinerary letters, accommodation bookings, and a letter of invitation from a NZ DMC -- as part of your booking.
